Essential Self Care: A workshop for Womyn
What can you expect from this workshop?
In this yearlong (12 months) self-care workshop, I will share with you information on how I support my self-care efforts on a daily basis. Through a regime of daily restorative yoga, positive affirmations, reiki self-healing and the use of essential oils, I have addressed various emotional and mental health issues that arise for me on a daily basis.
Each month, I will address a different ‘feel’ we go through, that a consistent self-care practice will benefit. You will work though that ‘feel’ each day and prepare yourself for any future instances of feeling this way.
What do you get?
You will receive access to four, 15-18 minute restorative yoga videos per week, every month (to be done daily), positive affirmations to be repeated or meditated upon while practicing yoga/throughout your day, guided reiki self-healings as well as a list of specific essential oils that will assist with our ‘feel’ of the month. Each week you build upon the previous week, by watching the weekly videos in succession. By week 4, you will be doing 1 hr. of yoga a day.
I will also provide you with an online ‘workbook’ or list of questions that you can ask yourself each week to gauge and check in with yourself. Give you a chance to sit and ask yourself how you are feeling; what are any other ways you are showing up for yourself and a give you the space to document what’s going on in your head. Specifically, while we are doing the physical work (yoga + reiki). I will also create a self-care calendar that you can use for additional tips on ways to love on yourself. You will also have my on-going support both through email as well as through text. If you need an ear, we can schedule a one to one call, anytime.
You will also receive education of how to use essential oils, for emotional health. What are in them, how they are made and the various ways you can incorporate them into your self-care practice.
What will you leave with?
You will leave with a better sense of how to take better care of physical self, your mental and emotional self, which will give you a deeper connection with your body. You will leave with a deeper feeling of love towards yourself, because you are actively taking the time and effort to support yourself. You are making an investment IN yourself.
A few years ago, before restorative yoga was a part of my life, before I discovered essential oils for emotional support, before I got my reiki attunement, I was a woman with anxiety. I was certain I had heart problems and I was stressed because I was going through a lengthy divorce involving my teenage daughter. I was building a business, trying to manage a household, show up in my romantic relationship as well as help my daughter navigate through high school. As a Woman of Color, a ‘bigger’ sized black woman, at that, I am constantly made aware that I have to work a little bit harder, know a little bit more and maintain a higher level of confidence in order to get anywhere, not only in the health and wellness industry, but in life. I know that the demand of all of those things, plus the desire to grow my business, affected my mental health.
I felt anxious, nervous and tense most of the time. Then I really started to look into ways to help myself without medication (IF YOU ARE PRESCRIBED MEDICATION, PLEASE CONTINUE TAKING IT. I knew this was something I could manage without). I kept seeing reiki and energy healing in my searches, my friend Erica, my oil guru, spoke freely on how oils helped her in her life. So I started to dig a little deeper. I was already using oils in my day to day for health benefits, so the emotional aspect was intriguing. I bought the emotional aromatherapy kit and just went for it. Testing them out not only on myself, but on my family as well. I would put a few drops in the diffuser if my fiance was feeling upset, or rub some on my daughter’s feet or pillow if she was down or in her teenage feelings. I would keep a bag with various blends in my bag for on the go assistance if I needed it.
My friend Racquel is a reiki master and she would always leave me with a sense of inner peace when I left her company. She always told me that I was a natural healer and that reiki was what I needed to help ground my emotions and myself. So, I went to her reiki workshop. I first learned self-healing, then moved on to the healing of others. This brought that extra bit of calmness and clarity I was looking for.
When I started practicing restorative yoga, it was literally, so I would be able to teach a new style to others and pick up a few more classes here and there. I did not know that it would be the class that would help me ‘get my life’, so to speak. When I’m feeling out of sorts, my back hurts from driving all day, when I just want a moment to be with myself and breathe, my restorative yoga practice has been my savior.
Fast forward today, I still have anxiety. But I now know how to deal with it. I can speak to people, on the phone, one to one and in public spaces and not feel as if I am having a heart attack. That heart problem was just a severe physical manifestation of my anxiety. I feel generally happier and better equipped to confront my day and be social. When you add up these various forms of self-care, practice them consistently, speak to yourself with kindness throughout the day, and just show up for yourself - you have an invaluable system of self-care that, with your energy, effort and commitment to self, can help you get through almost anything life can throw at you.
I do this to be a part of the still growing, but still too small community of other WOC, here to hold space for other womyn and people of color. I do this to be of service to all women of all shapes and sizes. Because when we thrive, we all thrive.
What is Restorative/Yin Yoga?
Restorative/Yin yoga (I teach a combination of restorative and yin) is an easily accessible form of yoga that is done predominantly in a seated or kneeling fashion, and the poses are held for between 1 and 6 mins. Each pose targets a specific muscle group or the connective tissues (fascia) of that group. It is most beneficial when done upon waking, when the body is not warmed. It unwinds the densest areas and allows you the chance to just breathe into the space you are in.
Benefits of Restorative Yoga
· Opportunity to actively practice patience with yourself
· Chance to focus on the actual present moment through connection with your body and breathing
· Restorative poses offer soothing care to process emotional pain by offering chance to breathe through and absorb energies felt
· Assists with PTSD (PTSD is caused by overstimulation of the sympathetic nervous system via traumatic event) as restorative stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system
· Moving meditation, perfect segue into meditation
· Long holds open up connective tissues of the area being worked
· Allows the opportunity to fully relax the body through conscious breathing
· Calms the heart rate, by releasing acetylcholine, which increases potassium and decreases calcium and sodium movement, resulting in a calmed heart rate
· Enhances flexibility over time by increasing joint mobility
· Releases body tension and shows you where you carry tension within the body
· Boosts immune system
· Balances nervous system by allowing the body to enter an active rejuvenated state
· Stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system
You will be emailed a link to each weeks yoga class with a password for repeat access.
What is Reiki?
A Reiki healing consists of laying the hands on or over the body in a prescribed pattern, allowing the energy of life to flow through the hands to the person being treated.
The basic element of life energy is the essence of this healing practice. Human beings are energy systems. If we accept this premise, then life energy is the essential and most basic element of the human energy system. We suffer when we do not have enough energy to carry out our life functions or when we, as energy systems, are out of balance. The effect of receiving a Reiki healing is that our supply of life energy is increased and we return to balance. In this state of balance and renewed energy, we can then heal.
The Usui System of Reiki Healing is first a healing practice focusing on self-treatment. Daily practice is ideal. The practice balances and strengthens the functions and health of the physical body, enhances relaxation and self-awareness, and quiets and nourishes the spirit.
Applying Reiki is practical and useful. It accelerates and strengthens any healing process from bruising to chronic illness to mental/emotional imbalance. Reiki can be used at any time and in any situation when we can lay our hands on or over another or ourselves.
You will receive your reiki 1 – self-healing attunement in this course to be used daily on yourself. If you want to add on to that, either by attuning to reiki 2 (healing of others) or reiki 3 (reiki master) or if you would like reiki healings by me, we can set something up anytime.
Please schedule your reiki 1 attunement with me before January 5th. It can be online or in person.
What are Essential Oils?
If you have ever enjoyed the scent of a rose, you’ve experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. These naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. Essential oils provide plants with protection against environmental threats and play a role in plant pollination. In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and being beautifully fragrant to people, essential oils have long been used for food preparation, beauty treatment, and health-care practices.
How Do I Use Essential Oils?
Essential oils are used for a very wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications. They can be used a single oil at a time or in complex blends in one of three methods:
Certain essential oils, when diffused, can be very stimulating, while others can be calming and soothing. Diffusing essential oils can also cleanse and purify the air of unwanted odors.
Essential oils are easily absorbed by the skin and can be safely applied topically. Please adhere to all safety labels.
Certain essential oils have a rich culinary history and can be used as dietary supplements for targeted wellness.
When speaking on self-care, you’ll want to ensure that the essential oils you are using are capable of delivering on their promise. You will want to make sure that you are choosing essential oils for their potency and their purity. Only use certified pure therapeutic grade oils, such as DoTerra essential oils.
